History of CLEI
- In 1972, a discussion panel about infomatics topics, organized by the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso – Chile, was held in Valparaiso - Chile where the necessity of regional events was emphasized.
- In 1973, the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso invited all the National Universities of Chile to participate in a new discussion panel about informatics topics.
- In 1974, the first Latin-American meeting was organized, with the participation of over 100 academics from different countries of the region, such as Argentina, Peru and Chile, with the name of PANEL 74. This event is now considered as the formal starting point of CLEI.
- From 1975 onward, annual Latin-American meetings were held in Valparaiso with the name of Panel, generally accompanied by an exposition, known as Expodata.
- In 1979, the 7th Panel-Expodata informatics conference took place in Caracas -- Venezuela, with Prof. Carlos José Pereida de Luceda (Brazil) serving as president of the Program Committee. This marked the official birth of the Centro Latinoamericano de Estudios en Informática – CLEI, with Prof. Victor Yockteng of Colombia as President and Prof. Aldo Migliaro Osorio of Chile as Executive Secretary.
- In that same year, 1979, CLEI was recognized by IFIP, owing to the effort of the Indian researcher Prof. Narshiman as Latin-American representative.
- In 1980, the Latin American event held in Caracas – Venezuela received for the first time the name of Latin American Informatics Conference.
- The 1981 and 1982 Latin American conferences were held in Argentina and Peru, respectively. Since then, the Latin American Informatics Conference has been held annually in different countries.
