Latin American and Caribbean Symposium in Informatics History.


The evolution of the communication and information technology (ITS) in Latin-America and the Caribbean (LAC) aprocess that it has been experienced in our subcontinent for nearly fifty years, and it already has a rich experience with prolific protects and pioneer initiatives.

Half of century from its incorporation to the reality of our region, this disciplines have grown enough to start making a balance and to worry about its past and origins. This reflexion and study will help strengthen the community and the identity of the discipline, and to document the experiences that can contribute project future developments.

Some possibles focal points for the development of historical investigations and the collection of testimonies are (among others):

  • The beginnings of computing in LAC, its links with Mathematics and the beginnings of digital electrónics.
  • The social vision of the computers in its dawn and its insertion process in the academy, the state and productive sectors.
  • The development of academic computing and the pregraduate, graduate and postgraduate carrers.
  • The development of the investigation in informatics, investigation groups and institutions and their production.
  • The development of computing in institutions and public and private enterprises.
  • The collaboration and cooperation in LAC. Regional and international projects.
  • Informatics Nacional Policys (INP). The influence of the existence or lacking of state policys in the informatics national development.
  • The development of communications, and its ALC social impact.
  • The Latin-american thought about Science and technology and its projections in national and regional informatics projects.
  • The constitution of academics networks and their influence.
  • The evolution of internet, and the participation of LAC institutions in this process.
  • How to maintain the educative and cultural identities of LAC countries in the Internet globalized world.
  • The informatics development projects and the personalities that played a leading role in the development of informatics.
  • The determination of the existence, preservation and socialization of the constituted patrimony, artifacts, information supports, documents and technologies used in the different stages of the becoming of informatics

For this first Symposium it is being summon to submit contributions, that ascribe o the following categories:

  • Investigation works. Articles that present different dimensions of the LAC Computing history. It must contain a structure, development and argumentation based on documentary sources, references, related work discussions.
  • Testimonies. Writings that present the direct witnesses' personal or groups experience of some event, historical fact o experience that be of relevance for LAC informatics history.
  • WEB site. Documents, photographies, videos, equip design or systems, brochures, journalist articles, books, courses, class notes, computational programs, etc, may be presented, even if it has been previously published. The digital objects send must be accompanied by a comment note where it describe the relevance of the object in the context of LAC computing history. With a selection of the send material it will be implemented a web site which name will be "LAC informatics historical annals".
